![]() Night owls might also want to check out the discos on board, even if that’s not normally their scene, since not much else happens on the boat after midnight. If you don’t like making conversation with strangers, you might want to dine out while you’re in port rather than eat in the main dining area. These spots tend to be less crowded and less noisy than areas where families are welcome. If you’re not a big fan of children or crowded spaces, check out the adults-only areas. When the boat is on the move, there are a number of things you can do to improve the quality of your stay. You’ll also want to check and double check to be sure that you have the proper paperwork that you need to embark before you get to the gangplank. This will give you enough time to recover from your flight, possibly enjoy the city itself, and not worry so much about getting to the boat before it leaves. Perhaps the most sensible tip is to arrive at the city nearest to your departure port a day or two ahead of time. If you plan on using them, be prepared to pay more than the listed rates. Travelers should also be aware that onboard spas and bars automatically charge extremely high percentages as “tips” when it comes to their services. The rate does vary slightly from company to company. Most American cruise ships also charge gratuities per guest on a daily basis. If you plan on going to the spa or doing some shopping while you’re on the cruise, you’ll need to adjust your budget accordingly. One of the best things about cruises is that you’re largely in control of how spendy you need to be – you can do activities at every port that cost money, or you can lounge around at inexpensive or free beaches and chill in the sand.Ī number of cruise lines even have onboard restaurants that are not included in their meal plans so you have to pay separately for them. In addition to those things, there’s often an additional charge for internet usage while you’re onboard the ship so you may need to factor that into your calculations as well. Some shore excursions are naturally pricier than others. Depending on how many places a ship docks, the port fees can also vary from trip to trip. How much you want to budget once you get on the boat varies based on what activities you want to try out. This might also include airfare and baggage fees for folks that can’t drive to where the ship departs. Of course, travelers will need to factor the cost of transportation to and from the port. ![]() It may be a good idea to bring some athletic clothes, in case you want to rock climb, spelunk into a cave, or pursue any other outdoor adventure on your trip ![]() Consider bringing comfortable walking or hiking shoes, and workout attire. Bring comfortable clothing, walking shoes, sunglasses, a daypack, and always check the weather before you leave the ship. You may even get to spend the day at the beach. However, doing so will make you consider each element in your scene more carefully, leading to much stronger compositions.” We’re so used to focusing on the main subject in a scene that it can seem strange to treat it almost as an afterthought. “Mastering the use of negative space takes time. All of this adds up to a more engaging composition.” It provides ‘breathing room’ giving your eyes somewhere to rest and preventing your image from appearing too cluttered with stuff. Negative space defines and emphasizes the main subject of a photo, drawing your eye to it. When you use it correctly, it gives a natural balance and sense of rightness to your composition. Negative space draws your eye to the subject of your art, giving it space to breathe. What you don’t include (negative space) is as important as what you do include (positive space). The interaction between these two elements is what directs your eye where to go when you view a design or painting. “What do positive and negative space mean in art? They are what create the tension in a piece. Two of my favorite quotes help define what I am looking for each time I look at a work of art and provide a thought-provoking explanation of the use of positive/negative space in the art of photography. I use the terms, artist and work of art to describe photographers and their photographs because I truly believe it to be one and the same. When looking at an artist’s work, I find the positive and negative space beyond the subject matter and often, when it works, it can turn a work of art from something great to something stunning. The subject of positive and negative space is something I often discuss. ![]() ![]() Hang Gliding Association (USHGA) created pilot proficiency ratings to measure and monitor the experience and skill-level of pilots. Today’s designs allow pilots to control and change the tension of the sail during flight, making flying much safer and flights longer and higher.Īs the hang gliding population grew, the sport became organized. In 1980, the free-floating internalized crossbar was introduced, along with double-surface sail construction. The slack sails and seated harness of the Rogallo model have been replaced with drum-tight Dacron sails, prone body position, and a heavier rig made of high-tech aircraft quality aluminum and stainless steel cables. Since then, hang glider design has gone through dramatic changes. Not surprisingly, this was also a time of serious accidents. All you needed to make a “rigid wing” hang glider was a few hundred dollars, a sewing machine, a double layer of sailcloth, a pattern to follow, and some aluminum tubing. By the 1970s, some people were building them at home. It wasn’t until the 1960s, though, that more recreation-minded individuals like aeronautics engineer, Barry Palmer, and Australian enthusiast, John Dickenson, began modifying and testing variations of the Rogallo wing for hang glider use. ![]() The technology that finally made hang gliding possible was developed in1948, when NASA engineer Francis Rogallo invented the self-inflating “Rogallo wing” as part of a spacecraft recovery system. Although he made over 2,000 test flights, his gliding career ended in disaster when, in 1896, he crashed from 56 feet in the air, breaking his spine. Hang gliding has come a long way since the 1890s when Germany’s Otto Lilienthal designed, built, and tested his series of gliders. ![]() ![]() Ballpark Estimate: $5,500 to $7,000 (lessons and new gear) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() "TIL you can click on widgets in WidgetMaker 1.22").Īll NSFW links must be tagged (including comments).
